HISTORY

According to the older residents, the Spaniards gave the name Bariis to the barangay. The word is taken from the word bariri, a kind of plant abundant in the locality that was made into baskets by the barangay’s early inhabitants. When the Spanish happened upon Bariis while walking through the forest, they saw a group of men gathering the bariri plant. The Spanish explorers then asked the men about the name of the place. The men, who did not understand the Spanish language, mistakenly replied with the name of the plant, thinking that they were being asked about what they were gathering. The Spanish repeated the word bariri as they journeyed throughout the place. The local inhabitants of the place adopted the name Bariri as the name of their home until it eventually transformed into its current name of Bariis. It is one of the geothermal barangays in the municipality.
