Libtong

HISTORY

Many years ago, Libtong existed as a sitio of barangay Bagumbayan that formed after numerous natural processes. This land of the sitio was formed after the continuous hauling of logs from the mountains of Bagumbayan, Biyong and Cale scrapped the topsoil of the land, forming a shallow gully. Torrential rains then caused massive flooding that further eroded the gully into a brook. The constant raining and flooding carried away parts of the soil in many places, creating numerous open holes filled with water called libtong, the Bikolano word for a small, open hole of water. There were so many holes in the soil that the place came to be known as malibtong. The prefix ma- was soon dropped and the sitio that formed on the place was simply known as Libtong. People eventually settled in the sitio and when their numbers grew substantially, they opted to separate from Bagumbayan to form their own barangay. This separation was led by then vice Lieutenant of Bagumbayan, Juan Crucillo. It is one of the geothermal barangays in the municipality.
